Mother Maybelle Carter
Lonestar Ranch, Reeds Ferry, New Hampshire, 1973

The Carter Family (Maybelle, her cousin Sara, and Sara's husband and Maybelle's husband's brother A.P.) was one of the foundation acts of country music. Their story is legendary, beginning with their first recordings in Bristol, Tennessee, in 1927, the same session that introduced the "Singing Brakeman" Jimmie Rodgers. Songs they popularized became country music classics, from "Wildwood Flower" to "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" And you can still hear Mother Maybelle's patented single-note guitar style in many folk, country and even rock-and-roll recordings. That's daughter Helen on the accordian.
