George Jones
Skating Rink, Waltham, Massachusetts, 1981
One of the greatest voices in country music, the hard-living Jones
is also one of its greatest rascals. Known as "no show"
for his inability to keep his concert datesthe stories of what
he did instead are legendJones has since cleaned up his act
and keeps an active touring and recording schedule well into his sixth
decade as a major star. His huge output includes novelty songs ("White
Lightning"), love songs ("Walk Through This World with Me"),
and the maudlin ("He Stopped Loving Her Today," about a
friend who just died). He has also performed duets with Ray Charles,
Elvis Costello, Linda Ronstadt, and James Taylor, who wrote and sang
on Jones's 1978 hit "Bartender's Blues." |
