Connie Smith
Grand Ole Opry, Nashville, Tennessee, 1974
Dubbed "Cute and Country," Connie Smith
had one of the strongest female voices in country music in the 1960s
and 1970s. She was discovered by Whisperin' Bill Anderson and had
a no. 1 hit in 1964 with her first effort, Anderson's "Once a
Day." Smith continued to score with both heartbreakers ("Ain't
Had No Lovin'") and hopeful tunes ("The Hurtin's All Over").
Strongly religious, Smith turned toward gospel music in the 1980s.
In 1997, she married country heartthrob Marty Stuart, and occasionally
comes back to sing her secular music, amazingly sounding and looking
pretty much the same as she did when her songs were charting years
ago. |
