Del McCoury
Gettysburgh Bluegrass Festival, Gettysburgh, Pennslyvania, 1974
Some entertainers reach stardom at a young; for
others, it's a long process. Delano Floyd McCoury is a good example
of the latter. In the 1950s he played bluegrass part-time in the bars
of Baltimore, then landed a job singing and playing guitar for Bill
Monroe in the 1960s. Del formed the Dixie Pals in the 1970s, the Del
McCoury Band in the 1990s, and quietly became one of the top bands
in the business, mixing an incredible tenor voice with a pure traditional
sound and strong contemporary material. Along the way, his collaborators
have included the rock band Phish and alt-country star Steve Earle,
as well as sons and band members Ronnie on mandolin and Robbie on
banjo. |
